[WT논평] The Middle East’s widdle Hitler

There are a few dangerous things we can all agree on. For example, we surely can agree it’s not wise to pet rabid dogs, commune with grizzly bears, swim in piranha-infested rivers or, of course, take a ride with me in a rental car.

We also ought to be able to agree that a nuclear Iran is as dangerous as a goose-stepping Hitler was in September 1939, when his Nazi devil machine invaded Poland and then crushed the rest of Europe.

If the world learned anything from World War II, it should be never to have a policy of appeasement with a diabolical lunatic. Appeasement, which is really failing to do what is right and necessary, is a proven dangerous policy that ultimately is always more costly than doing what must be done in the here and now.

I’m all for nuclear power, but it makes zero sense to allow nuclear power to be placed in the hands of certifiable nuts such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, quite possibly planet Earth’s No. 1 certifiable dangerous nut.

There are numerous and varying estimates as to when Iran would be able to enrich enough uranium to make a nuclear weapon, but there is almost unanimous consensus that Iran will indeed try to make a nuclear weapon as soon as possible. The world can’t let that happen. Sitting idly by and allowing weapons of mass destruction in the hands of religious kooks is crazier than the religious kook gaining access to weapons of mass destruction.

Based upon his numerous psychotic extermination statements about Israel, Mr. Ahmadinejad needs a strong dose of electroshock therapy, not his finger on a nuclear trigger. Other than the “blame America first” crowd and other leftist apologists, surely no one believes this international scab should ever have nuclear power.

So the question is:What does the world do about Iran trying to join the nuclear-weapons club within the next year or so? Will the world continue to bury its head in the sand and kick this nuclear can down the road, or do something meaningful now?

Reasonable people will vote to do something now. Unreasonable people will shuffle their feet, quote Rodney King and Green Day and make excuses about why the world shouldn’t do anything. They are useless, dangerous idiots.

Just as Germany and Japan needed to be reduced to rubble to get their minds right, Iran cannot be allowed, under any circumstances, to develop a nuclear weapon. The world is dangerous enough without having to contend with a voodoo kook who has stated he wants to wipe Israel off the map.

Hitler’s Nazi death machine cost the world millions of innocent lives. Let’s not make the same deadly mistake twice.

누구나 동의할 수 있는 몇 가지 위험한 것들이 있다. 예를 들어, 미친 개들을 쓰다듬거나 회색 곰들에게 접근하거나 피라나가 우글거리는 강에서 헤엄을 치거나 필자와 렌터카를 함께 타고 달리는 것은 현명하지 않은 행위라는 데 누구나 틀림없이 동의할 수 있다.

1939년 나치의 사악한 기계가 폴란드를 침공하고 뒤이어 유럽의 나머지를 짓밟았던 당시 거위걸음을 하던 히틀러나 마찬가지로 핵무장한 이란이 위험하다는 것에도 누구나 동의할 수 있을 것이다.

세계가 2차세계대전에서 무언가를 배웠다면 그것은 사악한 미치광이들에게 유화정책을 써서는 절대 안 된다는 교훈일 것이다. 필요하고 정당한 행동을 하지 못하는 것을 의미하는 유화정책은 당장 해야 할 일을 하는 데 따르는 대가보다 결국은 더 큰 희생을 항상 치르게 만드는 위험한 정책이란 것이 입증되었다.

필자는 핵무력에 찬성하지만, 이란 대통령 마흐무드 아흐마디네자드처럼 정신병원에 가두어 마땅한 미치광이가 핵무력을 손에 넣도록 허용하는 것은 비합리적이다. 그는 아마도 정신병원에 입원시켜야 할 지구의 첫 번째로 위험한 미치광이일 것이다.

이란이 핵무기를 만들기에 충분한 분량의 우라늄을 농축할 수 있는 시기에 관해 여러 가지 다양한 추측이 나오고 있으나, 이란이 가급적 빠른 시기에 핵무기를 만들기 위해 애쓸 것이란 데는 거의 의견일치가 이루어졌다. 세계는 그런 사태를 허용할 수 없다. 한가하게 소극적인 태도를 취하여 종교적인 괴짜들이 대량살상무기를 손에 넣도록 허용하는 것은, 종교적인 괴짜가 대량살상무기를 입수하는 것보다 더 무분별한 짓이다.

이스라엘에 관한 여러 차례 정신병자 같은 말살 발언을 근거로 판단할 때 아흐마디네자드에게 핵 방아쇠에 손가락을 대도록 할 것이 아니라 강력한 전기충격 치료를 해줄 필요가 있다. ‘미국을 먼저 비난하는’ 사람들과 좌익 변명자들을 제외하면 이 국제적인 악한이 핵무기를 보유해야 한다고 생각하는 사람은 절대 없을 것이다.

따라서 다음과 같은 의문이 제기된다. 내년쯤 핵무기 클럽에 가입하려고 애쓰는 이란에 대해 세계는 어떤 조치를 하고 있는가. 세계는 계속 모래 속에 머리를 파묻은 채 이 핵 깡통을 길 아래로 찰 것인가 혹은 어떤 의미 있는 조치를 할 것인가.

합리적인 사람들은 지금 당장 어떤 조치를 하는 쪽에 투표할 것이다. 비합리적인 사람들은 계속 우물쭈물하면서 로드니 킹과 그린 데이의 말을 인용하면서 세계가 아무 대책도 취해서는 안 될 이유를 변명처럼 늘어놓을 것이다. 그들은 쓸모없는 위험한 바보들이다.

독일과 일본이 마음을 고쳐먹기 위해 폐허로 변할 필요가 있었듯이 이란 역시 어떤 상황에서도 핵무기 개발을 허용 받아서는 안 된다. 이스라엘을 지도에서 지워 버리기를 원한다고 말하는 부두교도 같은 괴짜와 다투지 않아도 세계는 위험하다.

히틀러가 만든 나치의 죽음의 기계는, 세계가 수많은 무고한 생명을 희생시키도록 만들었다. 동일한 치명적 실수를 두 번 하지 않도록 하자.
