[WT논평] Hollywood honors hard-core Stalinists

Hollywood just can’t help itself in honoring hard-core Stalinists. The new movie, “Trumbo,” which turns screenwriter Dalton Trumbo into an avuncular idealist, illuminates the point. The film portrays this deeply committed Red totalitarian as one of the wisest, kindest and most principled American patriots.

It’s all nonsense, but I haven’t yet met a liberal who didn’t love the movie. He was never the saintly Socialist depicted, but a committed Soviet fifth columnist who covertly labored with his fellow comrades to bring about a Stalinist America (by force and violence, if necessary) ― and almost did. By 1944, Hollywood’s guilds and unions were swarming with Communists and screenwriter Reds were writing pictures hailing the many wonders of Joe Stalin himself.

Back in 1947, even liberal elites knew that Stalin was America’s deadly enemy and that the Communist party was his effective catspaw. Trumbo was a party member, loyal to the murderous Stalin, disloyal to his own country and determined to present Hollywood as a gift to Moscow. None of this, of course, is even alluded to in the movie.

Trumbo’s supposed lifelong battle for “free speech” and the Constitution, as the film would have it, led Dalton to support a curious crew of world statesmen, not well known for their belief in liberty: Lenin, Stalin, Hitler and North Korea’s Kim Il-sung, a group of the planet’s bloodiest rulers in the 20th century.

Trumbo supported Stalin when he was liquidating his own people by the millions through the purges, the collective farm program and the gulags.

When North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950, Trumbo jubilantly rallied to Kim Il-sung’s totalitarian Red regime, a virtual Soviet puppet state.

Trumbo’s script was titled An American Story and the heroine, Catherine Bonham, insists North Korea’s invasion of South Korea in 1950 is completely justifiable for this is “Korea’s fight for independence, just as we had to fight for our own independence in 1776.” Bonham, the voice of Trumbo, even roots for violent revolutions creating additional North Korean style governments to help brighten up the planet. And this, as the cliche goes, is the tip of the iceberg.

For decades, Hollywood’s elites have been lionizing socialist screenwriters. They diligently served the Evil Emperor in Moscow. They were proud to do so. They are doing it again, with gusto.

할리우드는 골수 스탈린주의자들을 존경하지 않고는 배길 수가 없다. 시나리오 작가 달튼 트럼보를 자상하고 친근한 이상주의자로 변모시키는 새 영화 “트럼보”가 그런 점을 잘 보여 준다. 이 영화는 지극히 독실한 이 공산 독재자를 가장 현명하고 친절하며 가장 원칙에 충실한 미국의 애국자들 가운데 한 사람으로 묘사한다.

이런 묘사는 모두 터무니가 없지만 필자는 이 영화를 애호하지 않는 진보주의자를 아직 만나지 못했다. 트럼보는 영화에 묘사된 성자 같은 사회주의자가 아니라 업계의 자기 동무들과 함께 스탈린주의 미국을(필요할 경우 무력과 폭력으로) 실현하기 위해 은밀히 노력한 구소련의 헌신적인 제5열 구성원이었고 거의 성공했다. 1944년이 되었을 때 할리우드의 각종 협회와 노조에는 공산주의자들이 우글거렸고 공산주의에 물든 시나리오 작가들이 조 스탈린 자신의 여러 가지 경이로운 업적을 찬양하는 영화 각본을 집필하고 있었다.

1947년 당시에는 스탈린이 미국의 불구대천의 적이며 공산당이 그의 효과적인 앞잡이라는 사실을 진보파 엘리트들조차도 알고 있었다. 트럼보는 공산당원이었으며 잔인무도한 스탈린에게 충성을 바쳤고 자신의 나라에는 불충했으며 할리우드를 모스크바에 선물로 바치려고 작심했다. 물론 이 모든 것이 이번 영화 안에는 암시조차 되지 않는다.

영화가 주장하는 것처럼, 트럼보의 이른바 일생에 걸친 “언론자유” 및 헌법을 위한 투쟁이, 자유에 대한 그들의 신념이 잘 알려지지 않은 레닌, 스탈린, 히틀러, 북한의 김일성 등 기이한 국제 정치인 집단에 대한 지지로 달튼을 유도했다. 이들은 20세기 지구에서 가장 악랄한 통치자 집단이다.

트럼보는 스탈린이 자기 국민 수백만 명을 숙청과 집단농장 계획 및 강제노동수용소로 제거할 당시 스탈린을 지지했다.

북한이 1950년 남한을 침공했을 때 트럼보는 사실상 소련의 괴뢰국가였던 김일성의 공산독재정권을 의기양양하게 응원했다.

제목이 “어느 미국 이야기”였던 트럼보의 시나리오 여주인공 캐서린 본햄은 1950년 북한의 남한 침공이 전적으로 정당화된다고 주장한다. 왜냐하면 이 침공이 “1776년 우리가 독립을 위해 싸울 수밖에 없었던 것과 같은 한국의 독립 투쟁”이기 때문에 정당화된다는 것이다. 트럼보의 목소리였던 본햄은 심지어 지구를 빛내는 것을 돕기 위해 북한식의 정부를 여러 개 추가로 만드는 폭력혁명까지도 응원한다. 그리고 이것은 흔한 말로 빙산의 일각이다.

그동안 수십 년 동안 할리우드의 엘리트들은 사회주의 시나리오 작가들을 떠받들어 왔다. 그들은 모스크바의 사악한 황제에게 부지런히 봉사했다. 그들은 그런 봉사에 자부심을 느꼈다. 그들은 그런 짓을 열정적으로 다시 하고 있다.
