파마를 해보시겠어요?

Ａ: How would you like your hair done this time? Want to try a perm? 이번에 머리를 어떻게 해 드릴까요? 파마를 해보시겠어요?

Ｂ: No way. I almost died last time when I did something special with my hair. My father hated it. 안돼요. 지난번에 한 머리모양 때문에 부모님과의 관계가 살얼음판 위를 걷는 것 같아요.

Ａ: You mean he didn’t like the highlights I put in? 지난번에 머리에 넣은 하이라이트를 안 좋아하셨나 보죠?

Ｂ: He said if I do something like that again, he would kill me. 한번 더 그러면 가만히 안 놔두시겠대요

우리가 ‘파마’ 라고 하는 그 파마는 ‘pama’ 가 아니라 ‘permanent’이다. 뜻은 아시다시피 ‘영원한, 영구한’ 이라는 뜻이다. 줄여서 ‘perm’ 이라고 부르는 것이 우리나라에 와서는 ‘빠마’ 가 되어 버렸다. 원래는 permanent wave가 정확한 표현이라고 할 수 있습니다. 파마하실래요? 라고 묻는다면 ‘You want to try a perm?’이라고 한다.
