[해외논단]‘선지자’ 솔제니친의 경고

최근 작고한 러시아 작가 알렉산드르 솔제니친은 작품과 생애에 비추어볼 때 현대의 선지자라고 할 만하다. 그는 구소련, 공산주의와 사회주의만 비판한 것이 아니라 서방 특히 미국의 사회적 결함도 지적했다.

30년 전 여름 솔제니친은 하버드대학교에서 신랄한 비판으로 점철된 강연을 했다. 미국과 서방이 현재의 길을 계속 갈 경우 어떤 미래가 닥칠 것인지 예언한 이 강연은 지혜와 선견지명의 모범이었다. 솔제니친이 수용소군도에 수감돼 있을 때 갈채를 보냈던 하버드대 교수들을 비롯한 서방의 지식인들은 이 이정표적인 강연에는 질색을 했다.

그는 모든 나라가 서방과 같아지기를 갈망한다는 허황된 믿음에 눈이 멀어서는 안 된다고 서방 사람들에게 경고했다. 그는 이런 사고방식을 가리켜 ‘맹목적인 우월감’이라고 부르고 오직 ‘사악한 정부들’만이 ‘서방의 생활방식 채택’을 일시적으로 방해한다는 생각을 버리라고 말했다.

‘용기의 약화’가 서방과 특히 “지식인 엘리트에 영향을 미쳐 사회 전체가 용기를 상실한 듯한 인상을 주게 되었다. 고대로부터 용기의 약화가 종말의 시작으로 간주되어 온 것을 굳이 지적할 필요가 없다”고 그는 말했다.

그는 서방 세계에서 자기만족과 물질주의를 통한 행복의 추구가 도덕과 인품의 발전을 교체했다고 말했다. “더 많은 것을 소유하고 더 좋은 생활을 원하는 욕구와 그것을 얻기 위한 고된 노력 때문에 서방 사람들의 얼굴은 근심스럽고 우울해 보인다. 대다수의 사람들이 과거 아버지와 할아버지 세대가 꿈도 꾸지 못한 수준의 유복한 생활을 누리고 있다.” 그러나 서방 사회의 이런 생활이 해로운 면모를 드러내기 시작했다고 그는 지적했다.

그는 미국에서 개인의 권리를 강조한 결과 다수의 복지를 무시하게 되었다고 평가했다. “개인의 권리 옹호가 극단적인 수준에 도달하여 사회 전체가 몇몇 개인에게 무방비 상태가 되었다. 서방 세계에서 인간의 권리보다 의무를 더 옹호할 때가 되었다.”

솔제니친은 자기만족에 도취한 서방 지식인들의 심기를 불편하게 만든 발언을 계속했다. 하버드대 교수들은 다음과 같은 솔제니친의 충고에 이를 갈았을 것이다. “파괴적이고 무책임한 자유가 무한정한 영역을 제공받았다. 사회는 인간의 끝없는 타락에 거의 무방비인 것으로 보인다. 타락 가운데는 자유를 남용하여 청소년들에게 윤리적인 폭행을 가하는 것과 포르노와 범죄 및 끔직한 참상이 가득한 영화가 포함된다.” 솔제니친에 따르면, 법과 개인 중심으로 조직되는 생활은 ‘악의 침투에 대항하는’ 능력을 발휘하지 못한다.

그는 서방 세계의 쇠퇴에서 차지하는 언론의 역할도 지나치지 않았다. 언론이 앵무새처럼 되풀이하는 “모든 사람은 모든 것을 알 권리가 있다”는 구호가 허위라고 지적한 그는 이런 구호가 거짓 된 시대의 특징적 현상이라고 말했다. “사람은 알지 않을 권리도 있으며 이 권리가 훨씬 소중하다. 즉 신이 준 정신을 소문이나 어리석은 생각, 공허한 대화로 채우지 않을 권리도 있다. 일을 하며 의미 있는 생활을 하는 사람은 도를 넘어 부담이 되는 정보의 홍수가 필요하지 않다.”

솔제니친이 이런 연설을 한 때는 1978년이었다. 테드 터너가 WTBS를 창설한 지 불과 2년 뒤이고, 펜실베이니아에서 HBO가 출범하고 6년이 지났을 때였다. 오늘날 케이블방송 프로는 천박하고 무의미한 내용으로 가득하여 솔제니친의 비판이 새삼 절실하게 느껴진다.

솔제니친은 미국을 좋아했으나 현재의 미국 상황을 자기 조국의 모범으로 추천할 수 없다고 말했다. “우리나라는 깊은 고통을 통해 정신적인 발전을 이룩했기 때문에 현재 정신적으로 고갈 상태인 서방의 체제에 흥미를 느끼지 못한다.”

솔제니친의 연설에는 미국의 대학생들과 정치인들이 읽어야 할 내용이 위에 언급된 것보다 더 많다. 사람들을 일깨우는 그의 연설은 미국의 대통령 후보를 결정하는 정당 전당대회에서는 들을 수 없다.

Death of a prophet

Alexandr Solzhenitsyn's work and life can best be described as those of a prophet. The prophet died last Sunday at the age of 89. Mr. Solzhenitsyn was not only a critic of the Soviet Union, of communism and socialism, he showed the West - and particularly the United States - more than a few of its own flaws.

Thirty years ago this summer, Mr. Solzhenitsyn gave an address at Harvard that was biting in its critique, exemplary in its wisdom and visionary in its predictions for what the future would hold should America and the West remain on their present path. It was a monumental speech that many academics - at Harvard and elsewhere - who had cheered Mr. Solzhenitsyn while he resided in the gulag, hated, but I loved.

Mr. Solzhenitsyn warned the West not to be deluded by what he said was a false belief that all nations yearn to be like us. This thinking is at the heart of President Bush's doctrine for dealing with the Arab and Muslim world. Mr. Solzhenitsyn called this "the blindness of superiority" and warned against thinking that only "wicked governments" temporarily prevent other nations from "adopting the Western way of life."

The Russian novelist observed that a "decline in courage" has affected the West and especially, "the intellectual elite, causing an impression of loss of courage by the entire society. ... Should one point out that from ancient times decline in courage has been considered the beginning of the end?"

Mr. Solzhenitsyn said that in the West, the pursuit of happiness through self-gratification and materialism has replaced moral and character development: "The constant desire to have still more things and a still better life and the struggle to obtain them imprints many Western faces with worry and even depression. ... The majority of people have been granted well-being to an extent their fathers and grandfathers could not even dream about." And yet, "Today, well-being in the life of Western society has begun to reveal its pernicious mask."

What about America's emphasis on individual rights? Mr. Solzhenitsyn said the result has been to ignore the welfare of the many: "The defense of individual rights has reached such extremes as to make society as a whole defenseless against certain individuals. It is time, in the West, to defend not so much human rights as human obligations."

There was more to disturb the self-satisfied intellectual elite. Surely faculty members at Harvard must have gnashed their teeth in the face of this remonstrance: "Destructive and irresponsible freedom has been granted boundless space. Society appears to have little defense against the abyss of human decadence, such as, for example, misuse of liberty for moral violence against young people, motion pictures full of pornography, crime and horror." According to Mr. Solzhenitsyn, life organized around laws and the individual has shown an inability to "defend itself against the corrosion of evil."

Mr. Solzhenitsyn did not spare the media's role in the decline of the West. He said the media's constant parroting of the maxim "everyone is entitled to know everything" is "a false slogan, characteristic of a false era: People also have the right not to know, and it is a much more valuable one. The right not to have their divine souls stuffed with gossip, nonsense, vain talk. A person who works and leads a meaningful life does not need this excessive burdening flow of information."

Again, this was 1978, just two years after Ted Turner created WTBS, just six years after HBO was launched in Pennsylvania. Today, cable programming is filled with the vain, the vulgar and the vacuous and Mr. Solzhenitsyn's critique rings even more true in 2008.

Mr. Solzhenitsyn loved America, but said he couldn't recommend it in its present state as a model for his country: "Through intense suffering our country has now achieved a spiritual development of such intensity that the Western system in its present state of spiritual exhaustion does not look attractive."

There's plenty more and every student and politician - indeed, every American - ought to read, or re-read the speech. It was a sobering and prophetic address and contains far more substance than anything we'll hear at the upcoming political conventions.
