별로 중요치 않아

A: How long does it take for you to come to the office from your home? 집에서 사무실 오는 데 얼마나 걸려요?

B: Well, roughly around about 2 hours.

음, 대충 2시간 정도요?

A: What? 2 hours? Why don’t you drive yourself?

네? 2시간이요? 직접 운전하는 건 어때요?

B: It doesn’t make any difference. The traffic is terrible in the morning. 별 차이 없어요. 아침에 꽉 막히거든요.

이렇게 하나 저렇게 하나 결과는 크게 다르지 않다. ‘It doesn’t make any difference.’는 바로 그런 뜻이다. 즉 차이를 만들 만큼 중요한 것이 아니라는 말이다. ‘It’s all the same to me’라는 표현도 같은 의미로 사용할 수 있다.

A: How would you like your eggs be? Fried or poached? 어떤 달걀을 먹고 싶어? 기름에 튀긴 거, 아니면 삶은 거?

B: I just want to eat eggs. It doesn’t make any difference to me how you cook it. 나는 그냥 달걀을 먹고 싶어. 어떻게 요리하든 별로 중요치 않아.
