[이호열 박사의 연예뉴스 ‘영어로 따라잡기’]''마이파더'' 실제 주인공 애런 베이츠 내한

다니엘 헤니 주연 ‘마이파더’(황동혁 감독,시네라인인네트 제작)의 실제 모델인 애런 베이츠가 영화 개봉을 앞두고 한국을 방문한다.
애런 베이츠(사진)는 여섯살이던 1979년 미국으로 입양되었다가 친부모를 찾기 위해 주한미군이되어 한국에 왔지만, 어렵게 만난 아버지가 사형집행 1순위의 사형수라는 사실이 2003년 11월 방영된 KBS ‘일요스페셜’에 소개되면서 국내에 알려진 인물이다. 세상의 곱지 않은 시선과는 달리 사형수인 아버지를 감사히 받아들인 애런 베이츠의 모습은 당시 많은 사람들에게 감동을 선사했다.
애런 베이츠는 현재 미국에 머무르고 있지만, 자신의 이야기를 다룬 영화가 개봉한다는 소식을 듣고 미국인 양부모와 함께 다음달 3일 한국을 찾아 ‘마이파더’의 특별시사회에 참석한다. 제작진은 촬영 도중 실제 주인공 애런 베이츠와 영화 속 주인공 다니엘 헤니의 만남을 추진했지만 여러 사정으로 인해 불발됐었다. 하지만 이번 기회를 통해 두 사람의 만남이 이뤄질 예정이다. 다니엘 헤니 역시 “실제 주인공을 꼭 한번 만나고 싶다”고 여러차례 밝힌 바 있다. (8월 27일자 15면)
The actual model for the movie ‘My Father’(directed by Hwang Dong Hyuk, produced by Innet of Cineline, starred by Daniel Henny) will be visiting Korea before the release of the movie.
Aaron Bates was six years old in 1979, when he was adopted and moved to America. To find his real father, he became a soldier and came to Korea, but after the tough procedures, he found out his father was a criminal sentenced to death. This story was broadcasted in November, 2003, through KBS ‘Iryo Special (Sunday Special)’. Regardless of social stereotypes, Aaron Bates boldly accepted the fate of his father, leaving a deep impression among viewers.
Aaron Bates is currently living in America, but hearing that this movie ‘My Father’ will be released, he plans to visit Korea on the 3rd next month with his foster parents and join the special preview. Prior to this, the producer had tried to let Daniel Henny meet Aaron Bates, but unfortunately, it there had been a lot of barriers in doing so. Daniel Henny had also said several times, “I really hope to see the real model for this story.”
