[WT논평] China’s deep-seated ideological paranoia (1)

The recent furor surrounding Lionel Messi‘s absence from a soccer game in Hong Kong provides a striking illustration of China’s deep-seated ideological paranoia and a tendency toward political schizophrenia.

At the heart of this controversy lies the Chinese Communist Party‘s profound suspicion of the international community, rooted in a belief of a pervasive and coordinated conspiracy aimed at undermining the communist government.

This mindset propels the Communist Party to interpret even the most minor incidents as evidence of a grand scheme against it, often leading to exaggerated and absurd reactions that serve to justify its paranoid worldview - and its aggression and belligerence.

On Feb. 4, the Argentine-born international soccer star Lionel Messi was in Hong Kong with his team, Inter Miami, for a match with a Hong Kong team. Mr. Messi, however, stayed on the substitute bench throughout the game due to what the visiting team’s doctor described as an injury.

The disappointed Hong Kong fans discovered that Mr. Messi nevertheless played for 30 minutes in a soccer match in Tokyo a short while later.

Suddenly, this minor sports incident involving Mr. Messi has been seized upon by the Chinese government’s extensive propaganda machine as a symbol of an alleged vast international conspiracy. Mr. Messi‘s decision not to play in Hong Kong has been construed as a move orchestrated by myriad forces, each with its own historical and ideological significance to China.

First, the reaction to Mr. Messi‘s absence cannot be disentangled from the Chinese leaders’ profound loathing of the recent political developments in Argentina.

리오넬 메시의 홍콩 축구경기 결장을 둘러싼 최근 중국인들의 분노는 중국의 뿌리 깊은 이념적 피해망상증과 정치적 정신분열증 경향에 대한 뚜렷한 실례를 보여준다.

논란의 중심에는 국제사회에 대한 중국 공산당의 깊은 불신이 자리 잡고 있는데 이런 불신은 중국 공산당 정부를 약화시킬 목적을 가진 조직적이고도 만연한 음모가 존재한다는 믿음에 뿌리를 두고 있다.

이런 사고방식은, 지극히 사소한 사건일지라도 자국에 반대하는 거대한 음모의 증거로 해석하도록 중국 공산당을 내몬다. 이런 태도는 종종 중국의 피해망상적인 세계관과 침략행위 및 적대적 태도를 정당화하는 데 도움이 되는 과장되고 터무니없는 각종 반응으로 이어진다.

아르헨티나 태생의 국제 축구 스타인 리오넬 메시는 홍콩의 한 팀과 경기를 갖기 위해서 2월4일 자기 팀인 인터 마이애미와 함께 홍콩에 체류 중이었다. 그러나 메시는 방문 팀의 팀닥터가 부상이라고 설명한 사유로 인해서 경기 내내 대기선수 석에 머물렀다.

그럼에도 불구하고 메시가 얼마 후 도쿄에서 벌어진 축구경기에서 30분 동안 출장한 사실을, 실망한 홍콩 팬들이 알게 되었다.

메시가 연루된 이 사소한 스포츠 사건을 중국 정부의 대형 선전기관이 소위 거대한 국제적 음모의 상징이라며 갑자기 물고 늘어졌다. 메시가 홍콩에서 경기를 하지 않기로 한 결정은, 중국에 각기 자체적인 역사적 및 이념적 의미를 지닌 다수의 세력들이 은밀히 조직한 행위로 해석되었다.

첫째 메시가 경기에 출전하지 않은 것에 대한 중국 측의 이번 반응은 최근 아르헨티나에서 전개되고 있는 정치적인 상황에 대한 중국 지도자들의 심각한 혐오와 분리될 수 없다.
