[Hello-ET!한마디 영어] I just can’t make head or tail of this.

도무지 갈피를 못 잡겠어.

A : The map clearly says this is the right road.

지도에는 분명히 이쪽 길이라고 나와 있어.

But the road signs keep telling us to turn right.

하지만 이정표에는 계속 오른쪽으로 돌아가라고 나오잖아.

B : That’s weird. The map says to go straight.

거 참 이상하네. 지도를 봐서는 직진해야 하는데 말야.

A : Which is the right way, anyhow?

대체 어느 쪽이 맞는거야?

I just can’t make head or tail of this.

도무지 갈피를 못 잡겠어.

can’t make head or tail of는 갈피를 못 잡다라는 의미이다. 표현으로는 to not be able to understand something at all (즉 이해를 전혀 못한다), I can’t make head or tail of it. (난 전혀 이해할 수가 없다), I can’t make head nor tail of the Chinese characters. (전 한자를 전혀 몰라요)라는 뜻이 된다. That’s weird(=strange / odd)는 It tastes weird(맛이 이상해), You’re really weird(너 정말 깬다), That’s weird - I thought I’d left my keys on the table but they’re not there(이상하네 테이블 위에 내 열쇠를 놓았다고 생각했는데 없네)로 쓸 수 있다.
