드라마 ‘대장금’(사진)이 한 사람의 인생을 살렸다. 한류의 열풍의 원조 드라마 ‘대장금’이 인도의 한 수감자에게 삶의 희망을 줘 화제가 되고 있다.

사연의 주인공인 나렌드라 쿠마 샤마씨는 현재 반복적 자살시도로 3년째 인도 북부 암발라 교도소에서 보호관찰을 받고 있다. 그는 예전부터 자신의 삶을 비관해 끊임없이 자살을 시도했는데, 교도소에 수감돼 매주 ‘대장금’을 보면서 자신의 삶을 되돌아 보게 됐다고.

그는 MBC측에 보내온 편지에서 “나는 항상 내 삶을 비관적으로 생각해 자살을 시도했다”며 “하지만, ‘대장금’의 주인공 장금이를 보면서 인생을 다시 돌아보게 됐다. 주인공 장금이가 끝없는 시련과 온갖 역경에도 굴하지 않고 끝까지 극복하는 태도를 보면서 삶을 긍정적으로 보게됐고 내가 겪는 고통은 아무것도 아니라는 것을 알게됐다”고 전해왔다. MBC관계자들은 “참 기쁜 일이다. 완성도 높은 드라마는 국경과 언어를 뛰어넘어 사람들에게 마음을 감동시키고 변화를 줄 수 있다는 것을 느꼈다”며 “앞으로 더욱 좋은 프로그램으로 시청자들에게 보답하겠다”고 밝혔다. 한편, 드라마 ‘대장금’은 일본, 중국, 대만 등 아시아뿐만 아니라 멀리 중동의 이란, 아프리카, 유럽 등 세계 60여 개국에 수출되며 ‘한류의 선봉장’ 역할을 톡톡히 하고 있다.

The Korean soap opera ‘Daejanggeum’ saved the life of a person. ‘Daejanggeum’ which was the very Korean TV drama that sparked the Korean Wave, is drawing attention for having given hope to the life of an Indian inmate.

Narendra Kumar Sharma has been under custody in the Ambala Prison for the past three years for repeated suicide attempts. His multiple attempted suicides were due to his pessimistic view towards his life, but he was able to look back on himself after watching ‘Daejangeum’ every week in prison.

In the letter he sent to MBC, he said, “I always thought I was living a miserable life and tried to kill myself.” However, he also added, “My problems seem minor compared to the severe situations these characters face. The actors in this series have given me and my friends here an optimistic view on life.”

MBC responded to this letter saying, “We were very happy to hear this story. It let us know that a TV drama of high quality can impress and change people regardless of their nationality or language.” They added, “We will express our gratitude to our viewers by producing better TV programs.”

‘Daejangeum’ has been exported to more than sixty countries around the world, including Asian countries such as Japan, China, and Taiwan, countries in the Middle East such as Iran, and countries in the African and European continents, doing its part as the ‘vanguard of the Korean Wave.’
