[WT논평] America prepares to confront multiple crises

America has never ? underscore, never ? faced the kind of drug abuse and drug crime epidemic we confront today. The crisis is a hurricane ? leadership now critical.

Numbers are breathtaking. Last year 47,055 Americans died of overdoes, double the number from 10 years ago. In 2014, 10 million people drove drug-impaired, and 20 percent of driving deaths were drug-related, not alcohol. Today, 80 percent of men arrested for crime in major cities are on drugs.

As night follows day, violent and property crime follows drug use, availability and addiction. One 2016 study concluded, after overlaying Mexican drug cartel presence, heroin use and homicides, “There is indeed a troubling statistical association between increasing homicide rates and competing [drug] cartels.”

Our future as a people depends on leadership and resolve to reverse the nation’s rampant drug crisis. Causes are many, some painful to admit, but solutions exist. We must stop shameless promotion of drug abuse through “legalization,” mass releases of drug trafficking felons, disrespect for law enforcement. “Recreation” is running ? not drugs. Absurdities have to stop. Leaders who poke perverse fun at widening drug abuse, implicitly promoting it, refusing to enforce federal laws against it, advancing the narrative that drug trafficking felons are harmless ? are off track.

The way out? Caring parents, teachers, clergy and law enforcement. President Trump has a rare chance to end this unconscionable, socialist experiment in human indifference.

Beating epidemics to an end is not easy, but the mandate for change is powerful. Let’s end the indifference, elevate solutions and benefit all Americans.

마약 남용을 퇴치하자

강조하건대, 미국은 오늘날 당면한 것과 같은 종류의 마약 남용과 마약 범죄에 직면한 적이 결코 없었다. 위기는 허리케인처럼 거세고 지금은 지도력이 중요하다.

각종 수치는 숨이 막히게 한다. 지난해 미국인 4만7055명이 약물과용으로 사망했는데 이는 10년 전의 2배가 넘는 수치다. 2014년 1000만명이 마약으로 신체 기능이 약화된 상태에서 운전을 했고, 운전 사망 사고의 20%는 알코올이 아닌 마약과 관련되었다. 오늘날 여러 대도시에서 체포되는 범죄 용의자 가운데 80%가 마약을 복용한 상태다.

낮이 지나고 밤이 되듯이, 폭력 및 재산범죄가 마약의 사용과 입수 및 중독을 뒤따른다. 2016년의 한 연구는 멕시코 마약 카르텔의 존재와 헤로인 사용 및 살인사건을 종합한 다음 “살인 발생률의 증가와 마약 카르텔들의 경쟁 사이에 우려되는 통계적 관련이 존재하는 것이 사실이다”라고 결론지었다.

미국민의 미래는 미국에 만연한 마약위기를 역전시키겠다는 의지와 지도력에 달려 있다. 원인은 많고 일부는 인정하기가 괴롭지만 해결책은 존재한다. 미국은 ‘합법화’와 마약밀매 중범죄자들의 대규모 석방 및 법 집행 경시를 통한 마약 남용의 몰염치한 장려를 중단해야 한다. 마약이 아니라 ‘레크리에이션’이 효과가 있다. 비합리적인 처사는 중단되어야 한다. 확대되는 마약 남용을 변태적인 웃음거리로 삼고 암암리에 장려하며 단속을 위한 연방 법률의 집행을 거부하고 마약을 밀매하는 중범죄자들이 무해하다는 발언을 하는 지도자들은 탈선했다.

출구는 보살피는 부모와 교사, 성직자, 법집행자이다. 트럼프 대통령은 인간의 무관심에 관한 이 비양심적인 사회주의 실험을 끝낼 드문 기회를 잡았다.

마약 전염을 끝내는 것은 쉽지 않지만 변화하라는 명령은 강력하다. 무관심을 끝내고 해결책을 끌어올려 모든 미국인의 이익을 도모하자.
