[WT논평] Who is on the wrong side of history

Progressives cannot fathom why many fellow Americans still resist their siren call for a permanent secular revolution in values, economics and everyday language.

Having taken over the media, universities, government schools, the entertainment industry and even corporate boardrooms, the progressives figured their revolution was inevitable. They dismiss opponents as being on “the wrong side of history.”

Deployed whenever a speed bump slows down their agenda, that phrase betrays the progressive movement’s Marxist roots. Since the French Revolution, the left has seen history as an ongoing dialectic (thesis, anti-thesis, synthesis) that is steadily evolving (like humanity itself, we’re told) toward a classless, property-free society.

To get there, they have had to persuade their fellow citizens to adopt their rosy, futuristic view, or simply use brute force.

In America, with our long tradition of individualism, capitalism, vibrant religious faith and strong families, the left has taken a third road: political correctness. You need not persuade vast numbers of people, nor do you need to line them up and shoot them, as they did in Soviet Russia, Communist China, North Korea and Cuba.

Instead, you commandeer the institutions that convey cultural values ? including corporations ? and use them to enforce the speaking of a new language that is always one step ahead of the mindset of the “deplorables,” and irredeemables, especially those who cling to their guns and Bibles.

Millions of Americans are being told to accept what they know to be false. But the good news is that eventually, peddlers of lies lose respect and are no longer trusted. In the Soviet Union, people eventually believed the opposite of whatever the regime told them.

진보주의자들은 미국의 많은 동포들이 가치관과 경제 및 일상 언어의 영구적이고 세속적인 혁명을 촉구하는 그들의 기만적 발언을 여전히 거부하는 이유를 헤아릴 능력이 없다.

언론매체, 대학교, 공립학교, 오락산업, 심지어 기업 중역실조차 장악한 진보주의자들은 자기네 혁명이 불가피하다고 지레 짐작했다. 그들은 상대방이 ‘역사의 틀린 편’에 섰다고 일축한다.

과속방지턱이 그들의 목표 실현을 늦출 때마다 사용되는 그 문구는 진보주의운동의 마르크스주의 뿌리를 드러낸다. 프랑스혁명 이후 좌익은 역사를 진행 중인 정, 반, 합의 변증법으로 보았다. 즉 우리가 듣고 있는 바와 같이 역사는 계급이 없고 재산에서 해방된 사회를 향해 인간성 자체와 마찬가지로 서서히 진화하는 것으로 그들은 본다.

그곳에 도달하기 위해서 그들은 자기네 동료 시민들이 자기네 장밋빛 미래관을 채택하도록 설득하거나 아니면 단순한 폭력의 힘을 사용해야 한다.

개인주의, 자본주의, 활기 찬 종교적 신앙, 강력한 가족제도의 오랜 전통을 유지해온 미국에서 좌익은 제3의 길, 즉 정치적 공정성을 선택했다. 당신은 방대한 수의 사람들을 설득할 필요나 혹은 구소련, 공산중국, 북한, 쿠바에서 그랬던 것처럼 사람들을 줄세워 총질할 필요도 없다.

그 대신에 당신은 기업을 포함하여 문화적 가치관을 전달하는 각종 제도를 징발하여 ‘한심한 인간들’과 구제가 불가능한 인간들, 특히 자신의 총과 성경에 집착하는 사람들의 사고방식보다 항상 한 걸음 앞선 새 언어를 말하도록 강요하는 데 그런 제도를 이용한다.

다수의 미국인들은 자신의 지식이 허위란 사실을 인정하라는 말을 듣는다. 그러나 거짓말하는 자들이 결국은 존경을 잃고 더 이상 신임을 받지 못한다는 사실은 반가운 소식이다. 구소련에서는 국민들이 정권의 말을 반대로 믿게 되었다.
