5월 하순 샌프란시스코를 방문한 마리엘라 카스트로는 “우리가 원하는 것은 사회주의를 통한 해방”이라고 말했다. 쿠바 지도자 라울 카스트로의 딸인 그녀는 환호하는 청중들을 향해 “내가 미국 시민이라면 오바마를 대통령으로 뽑을 것이다. 나는 오바마가 성실하며 진심을 말하는 것으로 생각한다”고 덧붙였다.

지난해 전직 미국 대통령 지미 카터가 아바나를 방문하여 마리엘라의 아버지와 삼촌을 매우 기쁘게 해 주었다. 카터는 피델 카스트로와의 만남에 관해 “우리는 오랜 친구처럼 반갑게 인사를 했다”고 설명했다.

피델 카스트로는 “2002년에 우리는 그를 따뜻하게 영접했다. 나는 지금 다시 존경을 표하는 바”이라고 화답했다. 이 미국인 손님을 사적으로 면담한 라울 카스트로는 “지미 카터는 미국 대통령들 가운데서 가장 뛰어났다”고 치켜세웠다.

사실 민주당의 많은 인사들에게 카스트로의 쿠바는 국민들이 웃고 노래하는 “오즈의 나라”와 비슷해 보인다. 이런 지적이 과장처럼 보이는 사람들을 위해 예를 들겠다. 민주당의 양심이라고 불린 조지 맥거번은 1975년 쿠바를 방문한 다음 이렇게 말했다. “우리는 가는 곳마다 웃는 어린이들에게 둘러싸였다. 아이들은 피델 카스트로를 좋아하는 것이 명백했다.”

그 다음에는 평생 민주당의 머슴노릇을 자처했고 조지 맥거번의 선거운동 본부장을 지낸 고 프랭크 맨키위츠가 있다. 맨키위츠는 나는 “쿠바 국민들의 단결과 열성에 큰 감명을 받았다. 그들은 자기네 업적에 자부심을 느끼며 국민과 국가에 관한 노래를 지어 부른다. 이는 국민들의 자부심을 반영하는 것”이라고 적었다.

마리엘라의 백부 피델 카스트로는 오바마에 대한 지지의사를 밝히는 한편 대선후보 당시 오바마의 안전을 크게 걱정했다. 카스트로는 2008년 10월에 이런 글을 썼다. “미국에는 인종차별주의가 뿌리 깊게 자리 잡고 있다. 민주당 후보(오바마)가 평등과 정의를 꿈꾸었던 맬콤 엑스와 마틴 루서 킹 같은 다른 미국인들의 운명을 겪지 않은 것은 기적이다.”

피델 카스트로는 쿠바의 흑인 국가 지도자였던 풀헨시오 바티스타를 무력으로 축출하고 정권을 수립했는데 카스트로의 스탈린주의 정권에 흑인 당원은 9%에 불과한 반면 교도소 수감자의 80 내지 90%가 흑인이다.

오바마의 카리스마와 달변 및 총명함에 감동하는 사람이 진보파 시사 프로 진행자 크리스 매슈스뿐이 아니다. 피델 카스트로도 비슷한 증세를 느낀다.

카스트로는 자신의 말실수에 아연실색하는 정적을 차분하게 비웃는 오바마의 여유를 높이 평가한 반면 존 매케인 상원의원은 윤리의식이 없는 상습적인 거짓말쟁이이며 “마이애미 마피아”의 도구라고 비난했다. 마이애미 마피아는 미국의 쿠바계 공화당원들을 가리킨다.

그는 매케인이 대선에서 이겼을 경우 경제적 재앙을 초래했을 것이라고 주장했다. 그 이유는 매케인이 복잡한 경제문제에 관해 아는 것이 없기 때문이라는 것이다.

유럽 국가들 중 반수보다 높은 1인당 국민소득을 올렸고 인플레가 서반구에서 가장 낮았으며 대규모 이민이 몰려들었던 쿠바에서 인구의 20%를 해외망명 길에 오르도록 만든 인물이 카스트로다. 쿠바를 떠난 사람들은 전 재산을 포기한 채 목숨을 걸고 자국을 탈출했다.

카스트로는 정권수립 후 구 소련으로부터 거액의 원조를 받았다. 인구 650만 명이었던 쿠바가 받은 원조는 마셜플랜의 10배에 해당하는 규모였다. 이런 재정적 실패는 경제의 법칙으로 이해가 곤란할 뿐 아니라 물리의 법칙마저도 거스르는 것으로 보인다.

실제로 카스트로 측근 세력은 오바마의 측근과 수십 년 전부터 교류했다. 오바마가 다녔던 교회의 목사인 제레미아 라이트는 2006년 7월16일 설교 때 “나는 쿠바 교회협의회와 1980년대부터 교류했다”고 말했다.

쿠바 교회협의회는 사실상 쿠바 비밀경찰의 앞잡이 단체이며 쿠바 비밀경찰은 구 소련 KGB 및 동독 비밀경찰 슈타시의 합작품이다.

Obama’s lovefest with Cold War foe

“If I were a U.S. citizen, I’d vote for Obama for president,” boasted Mariela Castro during her San Francisco conference last week. “I think he is sincere, I think he speaks from the heart.” To cheers and applause from the San Franciscan crowd, Raul Castro’s daughter also proclaimed, “what we want [is] the power of emancipation through socialism.”

Last year, former Democratic President Jimmy Carter thoroughly charmed Mariela’s father and uncle in Havana. “We greeted each other as old friends,” Mr. Carter gushed regarding his meeting with Fidel Castro.

“In 2002, we received him warmly,” reciprocated Fidel Castro. “Now, I reiterated to him our respect and esteem.”

“Jimmy Carter was the best of all U.S. presidents,” Raul Castro gushed while seeing his American guest off personally and jovially.

In fact, for many prominent Democrats, the Castros’ Cuba resembles the Land of Oz, with Cubans laughing the days away - “ha-ha-ha! ho-ho-ho! and a couple of tra-la-las!” If this sounds hyperbolic, here’s Conscience of the Democratic Party George McGovern after a visit to Cuba in 1975: “Everywhere we were surrounded by laughing children who obviously loved Fidel.”

Then there is late Frank Mankiewicz, a lifelong Democratic factotum who served as campaign chairman for presidential candidate George McGovern, press secretary for Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and head of NPR from 1977 to 1983. Mankiewicz was greatly impressed by “the enthusiasm and unity of the Cuban people … they are proud of their accomplishments and sing songs about themselves and their country that reflect this self-pride.”

Mariela’s Uncle Fidel ringingly endorsed Mr. Obama the first time around, while greatly fearing for the Democratic candidate’s life. “A profound racism exists in the U.S.,” Fidel revealed in an October 2008 essay. “It’s a miracle that the Democratic candidate [Mr. Obama] has not suffered the fate of other Americans who dreamed of equality and justice like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King.”

For the record: Fidel Castro forcibly overthrew a black Cuban head of state (Fulgencio Batista) and replaced his government with one where just 9 percent of the ruling Stalinist party is black and the prison population is 80 percent to 90 percent black. He jailed the longest-suffering black political prisoner of modern history (Eusebio Penalver, who suffered longer in Mr. Castro’s dungeons than Nelson Mandela suffered in South Africa’s.) He sentenced other blacks (Dr. Elias Biscet and Jorge Antunez) to 20-year sentences essentially for quoting Martin Luther King in a public square.

Chris Matthews isn’t alone in swooning over Mr. Obama’s charisma, verbal agility and smarts. Fidel’s leg also tingles:

“[Mr. Obama] has a habit of looking at his adversary with serenity and laughing at the verbal gaffes of an opponent who looks blankly into space,” continued Fidel Castro’s endorsement, in which he also denounced Sen. John McCain as “a habitual liar, who lacks an ethical code and is an instrument of the “Miami Mafia” (i.e., overwhelmingly Republican Cuban-Americans).

Mr. Castro lamented over the “brutal measures” the George W. Bush administration had adopted during “the capitalist crisis,” of that time, because those “will provoke more inflation, more devaluation and more loss of markets.” A McCain victory would be “economically disastrous” because “he knows nothing about economic complications.”

For the record: Fidel Castro converted a nation with a higher per capita income than half of Europe, the lowest inflation rate in the Western Hemisphere and a huge influx of immigrants into one that provoked an exodus of 20 percent of its population against enormous odds and at the cost of their every possession. This after Mr. Castro’s fiefdom was lavished with Soviet subsidies that totaled almost 10 Marshall Plans (into a nation of 6.5 million). This economic feat defies not only the laws of economics but seemingly the very laws of physics.

Actually, Castroites have been associates of Mr. Obama’s associates for decades. “I have been affiliated with the Cuba Council of Churches since the 1980s,” boasted the Rev. Jeremiah Wright in a sermon on July 16, 2006. “I have several close Cuban friends who work with the Cuba Council of Churches, and you have heard me preach about our affiliation and the Black Theology Project’s trips to Cuba. The Cuban Council of Churches has been a nonpartisan global mission partner for decades. I have worked with them for two decades.”

“Nonpartisan,” Mr. Wright? Not according to Cuban intelligence defector Juan Vives, who from hands-on experience reports that the Cuba Council of Churches is, in fact, an arm of Cuba’s Instituto Cubano de Amistad con los Pueblos (Cuban Institute for Friendship with the People), itself an arm of the nation’s secret police, founded and mentored by the KGB and East German Stasi.
