[WT논평] China, a country labeled as the “sick man of Asia”

Far be it for the Chinese Communist Party to understand the sanctified split between news and opinion that characterizes most American newspapers, including this one.

At most newspapers, reporters strive to report objectively; opinion writers like ourselves are granted a bit more leeway to editorialize. (Some readers may not notice this spirit of objective news is not always rigorously upheld by the likes of The New York Times.) Ideally, news and opinion are wholly independent departments, staffed by discrete groups of writers and editors.

Nevertheless, even though they lack the understanding of this exquisite balance, Beijing’s move to expel three Wall Street Journal reporters from China in February as retaliation for an opinion piece the newspaper published strikes as capricious, misguided and chilling.

The CCP took umbrage at a recent opinion piece in the Journal that labeled China the “sick man of Asia,” an obvious allusion to the 19th century when the flailing Ottoman Empire was called the “sick man of Europe.”

Their retaliation? Telling three reporters from the Beijing bureau, including the deputy bureau chief, to pack up and vacate the country within five days, even though they had absolutely nothing to do with the supposedly offensive opinion column.

Of course, given that Beijing is currently effectively on lockdown given the spread of the mysterious coronavirus, leaving the country at the moment may not seem like much of a punishment. But the ouster is still a chilling sign of China’s war on freedom and the safe conveyance of information.

China is growing less free and more repressive. That’s not only a tragedy for U.S. readers who will know less about what is occurring in China, but for the Chinese people, who grow more oppressed.

“아시아의 병자”라고 불린 나라 중국

본지를 포함한 대부분의 미국 신문들의 특징을 이루는 뉴스와 논설 사이의 성역화된 구분을 중국 공산당은 이해할 마음이 조금도 없다.

대부분의 신문에서는 기자들이 객관적으로 보도하기 위해서 애를 쓴다. 우리와 같은 논설 필진은 논평하는 재량을 좀 더 인정받는다. 이런 객관적인 뉴스의 정신이 뉴욕타임스 같은 신문들에 의해서 항상 활발하게 옹호되지 않는다는 사실을 일부 독자들은 알아채지 못한다. 뉴스와 논설을 담당하는 부서들은 신중한 일단의 필진과 편집진이 각각 배치되어 완전히 독립적으로 운영되는 것이 이상적이다.

베이징이 이런 정교한 균형을 잘 모르는데도 월스트리트저널이 게재한 논평 기사에 대한 보복으로 이 신문의 기자 3명을 2월 중국에서 추방한 조치는 판단을 잘못한 변덕스럽고 으스스한 인상을 주는 조치다.

중국 공산당은 중국을 “아시아의 병자”라고 부른 월스트리트저널의 최근 논평기사에 분노했는데 이 호칭은 19세기에 몸부림을 치던 오토만제국이 “유럽의 병자”라고 불렸던 사실을 분명 넌지시 빗댄 것이다.

중국 공산당의 보복은? 아마도 중국을 불쾌하게 만든 칼럼과 전혀 아무 관련이 없음에도 불구하고 지국장을 포함한 베이징 지국 기자 3명에게 짐을 싸서 5일 안에 중국을 떠나라고 통보했다.

현재 베이징 내의 이동이 사실상 제한받고 의문의 코로나바이러스가 확산되는 상황을 감안할 때 당장 중국을 떠나는 것은 물론 그다지 큰 처벌처럼 보이지 않을 수도 있다. 그러나 이번 추방은 자유 및 안전한 정보의 전달에 대한 중국의 전쟁의 여전히 으스스한 징표이다.

중국은 자유를 축소하고 압제를 강화하고 있다. 그것은 중국 내에서 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는지 점점 더 모르게 되는 미국 독자들뿐 아니라 더 많은 압제를 받는 중국인들에게 비극이다.
