[WT논평] The Strange Death of Europe

Europeans seem to have an increasingly bizarre and perhaps self-destructive view of the world, and their place in it. Last year, the Irish postal service issued a stamp to “commemorate” the 50th anniversary of the death of “Argentinian Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara.”

Is it conceivable that letter carriers and others in Ireland don’t understand the contempt with which Marxist revolutionaries view bourgeois parliamentary democracies such as theirs? Can you even imagine the Cubans or Chinese issuing a stamp commemorating Adam Smith, Friedrich Hayek or Milton Friedman?

If you’re not yet as pessimistic as I am about Europe, allow me to offer a suggestion: Read Douglas Murray’s latest book, “The Strange Death of Europe: Immigration, Identity, Islam.” His bluntly stated thesis: “Europe is committing suicide. Or at least its leaders have decided to commit suicide.” He thinks there’s an outside chance that less exalted Europeans can still save their culture and civilization.

Start with demography which, if it is not destiny, surely ranks a close second. “Europe today has little desire to reproduce itself,” writes Mr. Murray, a journalist, author and director at London’s Henry Jackson Society.

Do Europeans view the future so dismal that they wouldn’t want their children to live there? Or have they decided that babies are a waste of time and money that could be better spent on cars, clothes, fine dining and vacations?

Other factors contributing to the coming calamity include Europe’s “guilt for its past,” its “existential tiredness,” and, of course, multiculturalism, an ideology based on the premise that all cultures are equal but that the cultures of the West are less equal than others.

유럽인들은 세계와 세계 속의 자기네 위치에 관해 점점 더 기이하고 어쩌면 자기 파괴적인 견해를 갖고 있는 것으로 보인다. 지난해 아일랜드 우체국은 “아르헨티나의 마르크스주의자 혁명가 체 게바라”의 사망 50주년을 “기념”하는 우표를 발행했다.

마르크스주의 혁명가들이 아일랜드 같은 부르주아 의회 민주주의 체제를 경멸한다는 사실을 아일랜드의 우편배달부와 여타 사람들이 이해하지 못한다는 것을 상상이나 할 수 있겠는가. 쿠바나 혹은 중국 사람들이 아담 스미스와 프리드리히 하이에크 혹은 밀턴 프리드먼을 기념하는 우표를 발행하는 것을 독자는 상상조차 할 수 있는가.

만약 독자가 유럽에 관해 아직 필자만큼 비관적이 아닐 경우 필자가 한 가지 제안을 하도록 하라. 더글러스 머레이의 최신 저서 “유럽의 이상한 죽음: 이민, 정체성, 이슬람”을 읽어 보라. 그가 직설적으로 말한 논지는 “유럽이 자살을 하고 있다. 혹은 적어도 유럽 지도자들이 자살을 하기로 결정했다.” 격하된 유럽인들이 아직 자기네 문화와 문명을 구원할 수 있는 가능성이 극히 낮은 것으로 그는 생각한다.

운명이 아니라면 그에 필적하는 인구부터 시작하자. 언론인 겸 작가이며 런던의 헨리 잭슨 협회 이사인 머레이는 “오늘날 유럽은 자식을 낳으려는 욕망이 별로 없다”라고 쓴다.

유럽인들은 미래를 매우 암담하게 생각하여 자기네 자녀들이 그런 미래 속에 살기를 원하지 않는 것일까. 혹은 아기가, 자동차와 의복 및 고급 외식과 휴가에 더 요긴하게 쓸 수 있는 시간과 돈의 낭비라고 그들이 결정한 것일까.

닥쳐오는 재앙에 기여하는 다른 요인들 가운데는, 유럽의 “과거에 대한 죄의식”과 유럽의 “존재의 피로”는 물론 다문화주의가 포함된다. 다문화주의는, 모든 문화가 동등하지만 서방의 문화들이 다른 문화들보다 덜 동등하다는 전제에 바탕을 둔다.
