[WT논평] Islam is not a faith as faith has been understood in the West

A combination of falling birthrates among the native-born and the influx of hundreds of thousands of Muslim refugees from the Middle East threatens to swamp the indigenous European culture from which America sprang. Preserving the best of the culture will be the responsibility of the emerging generations, and the size of that responsibility is only now coming clear.

Because French law forbids census-takers asking religious questions, estimates of the number of Muslims in France varies, but Muslims may comprise as much as 10 percent of the population of 70 million. Germany as recently as 2015 was believed to count about 4.5 million Muslims, nearly 6 percent of the population of 83 million. That was before Chancellor Angela Merkel permitted a million Syrian and other refugees, nearly all Muslims, to enter in 2016.

Demographers suggested in earlier years that the growing numbers of Muslims would assimilate to the powerful, largely secular Christian culture of the West. They observed that Islam shares some aspects of Judaic and Christian religious experience. But in other ways Islam is not a faith as faith has been understood in the West. In some Islamic countries Islam is bequeathed at birth, and leaving it for another religion is punishable by death. Islam is often not a faith of the heart, but of law.

Further complicating assimilation, Muslim immigrants tend to develop self-contained slums around the great European urban centers, which become incubators of Islamic extremism. Police fear to enter some neighborhoods and radical Islamic clerics aggressively recruit young men to wage jihad against the West.

Since 2014 Europe has contended with an upsurge of radical Islamic terrorism, a consequence of the European migrant crisis.

이슬람은 서방에서 인식되는 그런 신앙이 아니다

본토박이 주민들의 출생률 하락과 중동 출신 무슬림 난민 수십만 명의 유입이 겹쳐서 미국이 발원한 토착 유럽 문화를 집어삼키려고 위협한다. 문화의 최선을 보존하는 것은 신세대의 책임이 될 것이며 그 책임의 규모가 이제야 분명해지기 시작하고 있을 뿐이다.

프랑스 법률이 인구 조사원들의 종교 관련 질문을 금지하기 때문에 프랑스 내 무슬림 인구 추산이 다양하지만 무슬림들은 7000만 인구 가운데 최고 10%를 차지할 가능성이 있다. 2015년까지만 해도 독일의 무슬림 인구는 대략 450만 명인 것으로 추산되었는데 이는 8300만 인구의 근 6%다. 그런 추산은 앙겔라 메르켈 총리가 거의 모두 무슬림인 시리아 및 여타 지역 난민 100만 명의 입국을 2016년에 허가하기 전의 일이었다.

초기 여러 해 동안 인구학자들은 무슬림의 증가하는 인구가 강력하며 주로 세속적인 서구 기독교 문화에 동화될 것이라고 시사했다. 학자들은 이슬람이 유대교 및 기독교 신앙 체험의 몇 가지 측면을 공유한다는 견해를 제시했다. 그러나 다른 여러 가지 면에서 이슬람은 서방에서 인식되는 그런 신앙이 아니다. 일부 이슬람 국가에서 이슬람은 출생 때 대물림되며 다른 종교로 개종하는 행위는 죽음으로 처벌받는다. 이슬람은 흔히 마음의 신앙이 아니라 율법의 신앙이다.

무슬림 이민들은 유럽의 대도시 지역의 변두리에 자립적인 빈민가를 만드는 경향이 있어 동화를 더욱 복잡하게 만든다. 이런 빈민가는 이슬람 과격주의의 온상이 된다. 경찰은 일부 동네에 들어가기를 두려워하며 과격한 이슬람 성직자들은 서방에 맞서는 이슬람 성전에 종사할 청년들을 적극적으로 모집한다.

2014년 이후 유럽은, 유럽 이민 위기의 결과인 과격파 이슬람 테러의 급증과 씨름하고 있다.
