[WT논평] 2024 will be a more prosperous world than 2017

There will be many seen and unseen new technologies in the next eight years, so by the end of the Trump administration (assuming he is re-elected), the world will look very different.

Most cars spend much of their lives parked somewhere. They slowly lose value even when not moving and they take up a great amount of space. That is about to change with the advent of autonomous cars. These will be cars that you call on your smartphone and then almost immediately show up in urban areas, and take you where you want to go, without a driver. As a result, many people in cities will cease owning cars, freeing up the capital and space now tied up in them for a better use.

Some of the most radical changes will likely take place in education and medical care. As a result of the development of the smartphone, tablets and laptops, almost everyone on the planet will have access, almost for free, to the world’s best teachers, educational materials, and almost the entire stock of human knowledge.

The old moss-covered educational establishment is about to be disrupted in ways it cannot image. High-cost, low-performance educational institutions are going to disappear at an increasingly rapid rate, while real education (as defined by the teaching of skills and transference of knowledge) is going to be better and cheaper for almost everyone. And as technological change moves faster and old jobs and professions cease to exist, most people will be “retrained” several times, but in interesting and low-cost ways.

Health care costs of most government budgets are increasing at unsustainable rates but, again, technology is likely to come to the rescue. New devices are already in the pipeline to work with your phone to measure many of your body’s basic functions, catching problems early and, in many cases, providing people with low-cost solutions.

대부분의 자동차는 수명의 많은 기간을 어딘가에 주차된 상태로 보낸다. 그런 자동차는 움직이지 않을 때에도 가치를 서서히 상실하고 많은 공간을 차지한다. 자율주행차의 출현으로 그런 현상이 바뀌기 직전이다. 스마트폰으로 호출하면 도시지역에서는 거의 즉시 나타나 운전자 없이 당신이 원하는 곳으로 데려다주는 것이 자율주행차다. 그 결과 도시의 많은 사람들이 자동차를 소유하지 않게 될 것이며 이로 인해 지금 자동차에 묶인 자본과 공간을 풀어 더 좋은 용도로 돌릴 것이다.

가장 급격한 변화 가운데 일부는 교육과 의료에서 일어날 것이다. 스마트폰, 태블릿, 랩톱이 개발된 결과 지구상의 거의 모든 사람이 거의 무료로 세계 최고의 교사들과 교육 자료 및 비축된 인간 지식의 거의 전부에 접근하게 될 것이다.

낡은 기성 교육체제는 상상이 불가능한 방식으로 붕괴되기 직전이다. 고비용 저성과의 교육기관들이 점점 빠른 속도로 사라지는 가운데 기술교육 및 지식전수로 규정되는 진정한 교육의 질 향상과 비용 하락으로 거의 모든 사람이 혜택을 볼 것이다. 기술 변화가 더 빠르게 진행되고 구식 일자리 및 전문직이 없어지므로 대부분의 사람들은 몇 차례 ‘재훈련’을 받게 될 것이지만 그 방법은 재미있고 저렴할 것이다.

대부분 정부 예산으로 충당되는 의료비용이 유지 불가능한 비율로 증가하고 있지만 다시 기술이 구원에 나설 가능성이 있다. 당신의 각종 기본 신체 활동을 측정하고 문제를 조기에 발견하며 많은 경우에 저가의 해결책을 사람들에게 제공하는 새로운 방법과 기구가 곧 모습을 드러내 당신의 스마트폰과 협력하게 될 것이다.
