But the biggest loser of all may have been China. Beijing, irritated by the nuclear-armed regime on its eastern border while it simultaneously works to manage threats on its restive western edge, clearly wanted this summit to succeed. Consider the extraordinary measures it took to foster Mr. Kim’s train journey to Vietnam.

For 60 hours, Mr. Kim rode the Chinese rails. This was a significant undertaking, wreaking havoc on China’s extensive railroad network, which millions of people use every day. The security investment on the part of the Chinese must have been tremendous.

The investment in internet “security” certainly was. Chinese censors worked overtime deleting any references to Mr. Kim’s magical mystery tour lest anyone figure out where he was at any given time.

This shows, if nothing else, that Beijing really, really wanted Mr. Kim to make a deal. It’s also telling that, immediately after the collapse of the talks, members of Mr. Kim’s entourage immediately flew to Beijing. It was as if they had been summoned.

But perhaps even more upsetting to Beijing than the collapse of the talks themselves will be what Mr. Trump’s behavior says about his negotiating style. Washington and Beijing are in the midst of heated trade negotiations, after all.

And on a recent visit to Beijing, people I met were positively rubbing their hands in anticipation of what they expected to be a forthcoming Trump cave-in on various sticky trade issues, notably forced technology transfers and intellectual property theft.

But now, Mr. Trump has shown he’s willing to walk away from a deal that he perceives as bad. This will cause no small amount of heartburn in Beijing. The “potentials” for China suddenly just got a lot worse.

그러나 이 모두 가운데서 가장 큰 패배자는 중국일 것이다. 자국 동부 국경의 핵무장 정권에 짜증을 내는 한편 불만에 들끓는 서부 변방의 위협을 관리하기 위해 노력하고 있는 베이징은 분명히 이번 정상회담이 성공하기를 원했다. 베이징이 김정은의 베트남행 기차여행에 공들인 이례적인 조치를 고려해 보자.

김정은은 60시간 동안 중국 철도를 달렸다. 이것은 매일 수백만명이 이용하는 중국의 방대한 철도망에 큰 피해를 주는 중대한 일이었다. 중국 측 안보 투자가 엄청났던 것은 틀림없다.

국내 ‘보안’에 대한 투자가 분명히 엄청났다. 중국 검열당국은 김정은의 마법처럼 수수께끼에 싸인 여행에 관한 모든 언급을 삭제하기 위해 초과근무를 했다. 김이 특정한 시간에 특정한 장소에 있는 것을 그 누구도 알아내지 못하도록 하기 위해서였다.

적어도 이는 베이징이 김의 협상 성사를 간절히 원했다는 것을 보여준다. 회담 결렬 직후 김의 수행단 일부가 즉각 베이징으로 날아간 사실 또한 은연중에 시사하는 바가 있다. 그들이 마치 소환당한 듯한 모양새였다.

그러나 베이징의 속을 더 뒤집어놓은 것은 회담 결렬 자체보다도 트럼프의 행동이 그의 협상 스타일을 드러낸 점일 것이다. 어쨌거나 워싱턴과 베이징은 열띤 무역 협상을 한창 벌이고 있다.

최근 베이징을 찾았을 때 필자가 만난 중국인들은 여러 가지 다양하고 힘든 무역 현안, 특히 강제 기술 이전과 지식재산 절도에서 장차 트럼프가 굴복할 것이라는 예상과 기대로 만족감을 드러냈다.

그러나 지금 트럼프는 나쁘다고 생각하는 거래에서 걸어 나갈 의사가 있다는 것을 보여 주었다. 이는 베이징 내부에 작지 않은 가슴앓이를 초래할 것이다. 중국의 ‘잠재력’이 그냥 갑자기 훨씬 나빠졌다.
