미국의 가톨릭교회가 흑백분리 종식 이후 최대 규모의 시민 불복종 운동에 나서고 있다. 미국 가톨릭 주교단은 정부의 의무 피임 정책에 저항할 것을 신도들에게 촉구한다.

불복종 운동에 앞서 가톨릭의 여러 교구와 대학 및 병원은 산아제한과 불임수술 및 낙태약에 대한 보조금을 종교단체에 부담시키는 버락 오바마 행정부의 명령에 맞서 다수의 소송을 제기했다. 이 의무 조항은 가톨릭교회의 양심의 자유와 종교의 자유에 대한 전례 없는 공격일 뿐만 아니라 제1수정 헌법을 노골적으로 침해하는 조치다.

국가는 가톨릭교회뿐만 아니라 유대교와 이슬람교 역시 오바마 대통령의 급진적인 세속화 정책에 동조할 것을 강요하고 있다. 동조하지 않을 경우 교단에 속한 여러 기관 즉 병원, 학교, 자선단체가 높은 벌금을 물게 되고 결국 문을 닫게 된다.

미국 가톨릭 주교회의는 7월 초까지 ‘자유의 이주일’이란 명칭의 운동을 전개한다. 운동의 목적은 오바마의 권력 장악으로 야기되는 임박한 위협을 가톨릭 교인들은 물론 자유를 사랑하는 모든 미국인들에게 경고하는 것이다. 피임의무 준수 조치는 8월1일부터 발효된다.

오바마는 가톨릭교회를 상대로 이념전쟁을 벌이고 있다. 그가 강요하는 의무에 따라 가톨릭교회는 낙태, 피임, 불임수술에 관한 자기네 핵심적인 가르침을 더 이상 따를 수 없으며 거부할 경우 막대한 벌금을 물게 된다.

오바마는 교황 베네딕토 16세를 대신하여 로마 가톨릭교회의 수장 자리를 차지하려 든다. 그는 고대 로마 황제처럼 행동하고 있다. 국가의 이교도 윤리를 교회에 강요할 수 있다고 그는 주장한다. 우리는 3세기의 로마로 퇴보하고 있다.

오바마는 현대 진보주의의 핵심인 세속적 광신을 구체적으로 보여준다. 그 연장선 위에는 음험한 충동 즉 반기독교 편견이 있다. 수십년 동안 진보주의자들은 공공생활에서 종교를 숙청하는 방법을 찾아왔다. 법정에서 십계명이 철거되고 공립학교의 기도 시간이 금지되었으며, 지적인 최대의 거짓말 가운데 하나인 다윈의 진화론이 정식으로 교육되고 있다.

기독교인들은 대중문화 속에서 다반사로 비방과 조롱을 당하고 있다. 오바마는 좌익 기독교 혐오의 극치를 상징한다.

오바마 건강보험에 따라 미국인들은 낙태 비용을 부담하게 된다. 따라서 독실한 기독교인들과 다른 종교 신봉자들은 윤리적으로 가증스럽고 신학적으로 금지된 행위인 낙태의 비용을 지불하게 된다. 낙태는 살인이다. 미국에서는 5000만명 이상의 태아가 유산당했다. 일종의 홀로코스트다. 오바마 건강보험 때문에 기독교인들이 국가의 태아살해 공범이 된다.

현재 오바마의 피임 의무화는 산아제한에 대한 가톨릭 교인들의 견해로 인해 가톨릭을 표적으로 삼고 있다.

미국의 종교단체들은 건국 초기부터 신앙의 자유를 유지해 왔다. 신앙의 기본적인 내용을 결정하는 것은 국가나 기성교회가 아니라 종교인들 자신이다. 오바마는 기본적인 종교의 자유를 짓밟고 있을 뿐만 아니라 가톨릭 교인들을 2등 시민으로 분류하여 양심의 권리와 종교의 자유를 박탈해야 할 대상으로 취급하고 있다.

그는 가톨릭교회가 탄압을 받는 세속적인 사회주의 초국가를 만들고 있다. 이런 시도는 ‘여성의 건강보험’으로 위장하고 있으나 법에 따라 한 인종 전체를 차별했던 과거 미국의 흑인차별과 같은 종류의 차별이다.

미국 가톨릭 주교단이 평화적인 대규모 시민 불복종 운동을 촉구하는 까닭이 여기에 있다. 독실한 가톨릭 교인들은 급진적인 진보주의 제단에 자기네 자유와 신앙을 희생으로 바치지 않을 것이다. 그들은 정부 시책에 저항하여 피임의무를 무시해야 한다.

정부가 벌금 부과를 고집할 경우 납부하지 말아야 한다. 광범한 불복종 운동은 진보주의 국가교회의 반기독교적인 독재의 속성을 노출시켜 진보주의를 붕괴시키는 첫걸음이 된다.

State-sanctioned anti-Christianity

American Catholics are mobilizing for the biggest campaign of mass civil disobedience since the end of segregation. U.S. Catholic bishops are calling on Catholics to defy the Obama administration's contraceptive mandate. This comes in addition to numerous lawsuits launched by 46 plaintiffs from dioceses, universities and hospitals against the administration's order that compels religious organizations to subsidize birth control, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs. The mandate is an unprecedented assault upon the Catholic Church's conscience rights and religious freedom, blatantly usurping the First Amendment.

The state is forcing churches, as well as synagogues and mosques, to consent to President Obama's radical secular agenda. Otherwise, their institutions - hospitals, schools, universities and charities - will face stiff penalties and eventually close down. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is launching a campaign called the Fortnight for Freedom, from June 21 until July 4. Its goal: alert Catholics - and all freedom-loving Americans - to the impending threat posed by Mr. Obama's power grab. The contraceptive mandate is scheduled to take effect on Aug 1.

Mr. Obama is waging an ideological war against the Catholic Church. His mandate is essentially telling the church that it can no longer follow its central teachings on abortion, contraception and sterilization - or else it risks massive fines. Mr. Obama seeks to make himself, not Pope Benedict XVI, the head of the Roman Catholic Church. He is behaving like an ancient Roman emperor. He is claiming the state can impose its pagan morality upon the church's institutions. We are sliding back to third-century Rome.

Mr. Obama embodies the secular fanaticism at the heart of modern liberalism - and by extension, its animating dark impulse: anti-Christian bigotry. For decades, liberals have sought to purge religion from the public square. The Ten Commandments have been taken down from courthouses. Prayer in public schools is banned. Darwinian evolution - one of the greatest intellectual hoaxes of all time - is regularly taught to students. Christians are routinely vilified and mocked in popular culture. Mr. Obama represents the culmination of leftist Christophobia.

Under Obamacare, Americans will be forced to subsidize abortions. Hence, devout Christians, along with other religious believers, will have to finance a procedure that is not only morally abominable but theologically prohibited. Abortion is murder. In America, more than 50 million unborn babies have been exterminated - a holocaust. Obamacare would make Christians complicit in state-sanctioned infanticide.

Now Mr. Obama's contraceptive mandate is targeting Catholics for their views on birth control. Since America's inception, religious groups have had their liberties preserved; only they - not the state or an established church - could determine their fundamental beliefs. Mr. Obama is not only trampling on basic freedoms, he is classifying Catholics as second-class citizens, who should be stripped of their conscience rights and religious liberties. He is erecting a socialist secular superstate in which the Catholic Church is to be suppressed. It is a form of Jim Crow - discrimination against an entire category of people encoded in law - masquerading as "women's health care."

This is why the USCCB is calling for massive, peaceful, civil disobedience. Devout Catholics will not sacrifice their freedoms - or their faith - on the altar of radical liberalism. They should defy and ignore the contraceptive mandate. If the administration insists on imposing fines, don't pay them. The same applies for Obamacare's taxpayer funding of abortion. Catholics must take a stand. If Mr. Obama and his liberal thugs want to throw defiant Christians in jail, then let them go ahead. The church is replete with martyrs. Widespread disobedience will trigger the downfall of the state church of liberalism, exposing its anti-Christian, authoritarian nature.

Unless Christians defend their faith, they will become a persecuted minority. If you think I'm exaggerating, just look north of the border. In the June 11 issue of National Review, Michael Coren, a Canadian TV personality and columnist, documents in chilling detail how Canada's same-sex marriage law is being used to criminalize the Catholic Church.

In 2005, Canada legalized homosexual marriage. According to Mr. Coren, there have been more than 200 cases - through the courts, "human rights" commissions and employment panels - against opponents of same-sex marriage. Critics have been fired or sued. For example, Bishop Fred Henry was charged with human rights violations for sending a letter to churches in Calgary that simply restated the Catholic Church's position on traditional marriage. Mr. Coren says that two Canadian provinces are contemplating bills that would make it illegal for teachers in private, religious schools to criticize homosexual marriage. The article states that a senior government official in Ontario - the country's most powerful province - vowed that if the Catholic Church did not embrace same-sex marriage and homosexuality, then it "would have to change its teaching." In other words, liberals are laying the groundwork to ban opposition to homosexual marriage and their larger agenda by claiming it is a "hate crime." This is creeping, soft totalitarianism; the drive to censor, ostracize and eventually eradicate traditional Christianity.

The secular left understands that there is one last institutional bulwark standing in its way: the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Obama's support for same-sex marriage, homosexuals in the military, abortion on demand, free birth control and embryonic stem-cell research are all part of an attempt to forge a moral revolution - to create what he calls a "post-Christian nation." In order to succeed, he must break the Church's will and coerce its institutions to serve his radical aims.

Contrary to myth, liberals are intolerant. They have now awakened the ire of the Catholic Church. We will show them they have gone too far.
