한마디로 허핑턴은 미국 문화를 저속하게 만들고 전통 윤리와 교양의 기준에 대한 전면공격을 가한다. 경제적인 집산주의와 윤리적인 무정부주의를 옹호하는 국제 진보주의자인 그녀는 또한 뻔뻔한 기회주의자다. 그녀의 칼럼과 블로그는 자기선전과 과대망상의 도구다.

1990년대의 대부분 기간 동안 그녀는 맹렬한 보수파 공화당원이었다. 사회 분위기가 공화당에 등을 돌리자 그리스계 미국인인 허핑턴 역시 입장을 바꾸었다. 그녀는 거의 하룻밤 새에 진보파 민주당원으로 변신했다. 이런 변신은 사회적 지지와 언론인으로서의 명성을 얻는 입장권이었다. 특히 할리우드의 인기인들로부터 호감을 얻었다.

시나리오 작가 에런 소르킨은 세라 페일린이 얼굴에 총을 맞기를 바란다고 말했다. 볼드윈은 체니가 부통령 시절 오사마 빈 라덴처럼 무자비한 학살을 일삼는 테러분자라고 주장했다. 쿠삭은 조지 W 부시 행정부가 히틀러의 독일과 비슷한 전체주의를 만든다고 비난했다.

이런 주장은 내실 있는 논평이 아니라 포르노 저널리즘이다. 공개토론과 정적들을 의도적으로 비하하는 행위다. 부시의 미국을 히틀러의 나치와 비교하는 것은 단순한 무지의 소치가 아니라 역사적인 어불성설이다.

히틀러가 만든 죽음의 기계는 유대인을 학살했고 유럽의 대부분을 점령했으며 야만적인 경찰국가를 뒷받침했고 근 5000만명에 이르는 사람들을 죽음으로 내몬 책임이 있다. 모든 단점에도 불구하고 부시는 서방세계를 이슬람 광신주의로부터 지킨 민주적인 지도자다.

허핑턴은 최근 그리스의 거리에서 정부의 긴축정책에 항의하여 폭동을 일삼았던 시위대를 지지하는 새로운 대의명분을 꺼내들었다. 허핑턴에게는 거리의 폭력사태가 진정한 피플 파워 구현이며 직접 민주주의의 실현이다. 그녀는 대중에 영합하는 포퓰리즘에도 불구하고 아테네의 고급 식당에서 그리스 총리와 식사한 사실을 자랑한다. 그녀는 짓밟힌 농부들과 뜻을 함께할지 모르나 부패한 엘리트들의 파티에 참석한다.

허핑턴은 하층민들을 동정한다고 말하면서 부자들의 사치생활을 하는 전형적인 할리우드의 위선자다. 그녀는 힘들여 쌓은 AOL의 명성을 깎아내려 언론의 시궁창으로 끌고 간다.

Huffington the hater

Recently, AOL posted an item on its general page discussing how men often fake sexual excitement and advising that they should, uh, take it upon themselves to "discover what stimulates you." Who knew there was so much fakery in the bedroom?

The fact that AOL would even run a lewd story like this - never mind give it top billing - reveals the change in editorial content since its merger with the far-left Huffington Post. The liberal website, founded by Arianna Huffington, was acquired by AOL in February for a stunning $315 million. Moreover, the deal made Ms. Huffington editor-in-chief of AOL's 1,200-member newsroom. AOL's stories are starting to reflect her radical views - undermining its credibility as a respectable Internet news source.

This is what now passes for informative news at AOL? Under Ms. Huffington's leadership, the popular website has become a pimp for the sexual revolution. It is peddling the Playboy philosophy, hoping to make it mainstream. Perversion and moral indecency are packaged as part of a "healthy lifestyle." What's next: the benefits of polygamy or bestiality?

For years, the Huffington Post has championed sexual permissiveness and social liberalism - gay rights, bisexuality, abortion, pornography and euthanasia. It gives a forum not only to rabid progressives, but to vulgar - and ignorant - left-wing Hollywood celebrities. Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin and John Cusack have written blogs littered with profanity and obscenities.

In short, Ms. Huffington is coarsening American culture and is engaged in an all-out assault on traditional morality and civilized standards. She is a transnational progressive who espouses economic collect- ivism and moral anarchy. She also is a shameless opportunist. Her columns and blogs are vehicles for self-promotion and self-aggrandizement. During much of the 1990s, she strongly backed then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Ms. Huffington was a fire-breathing conservative Republican. Yet when the tides turned against the GOP, so did the Greek-American pundit. Ms. Huffington was transformed, almost overnight, into a liberal Democrat. This was the ticket to social acceptance and media fame, especially among the Hollywood glitterati.

Ms. Huffington's call for pacifism and social democracy, however, masks her resentful politics. Her worldview can be distilled into one idea: hatred - the hatred of capitalism, America and Judeo-Christian values. Many Huffington Post contributors live in the fever swamps of the left, spouting ideological bile.

The Hollywood screenwriter Aaron Sorkin once wrote that he wished prominent conservative hunters, such as Sarah Palin, would get "shot in the face."

Mr. Baldwin claimed that then-Vice President Dick Cheney was the equivalent of Osama bin Laden: a murderous butcher. "Cheney is a terrorist," the actor wrote. "He terrorizes our enemies abroad and innocent citizens here at home indiscriminately."

Mr. Cusack accused the George W. Bush administration of erecting a corporate-fascist regime akin to Hitler's Germany. "We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world - a nation of bullies ... who would rather kill than live peacefully," he said. "We are not just Whores [sic] for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts."

This is not serious, substantive commentary. It is a form of journalistic pornography, the deliberate degradation of public discourse and political opponents. To compare Mr. Bush's America to Nazi Germany is more than simply ignorant. It is historically obscene: Hitler's death machine nearly exterminated the Jews, conquered most of Europe, oversaw a brutal police state and was responsible for the deaths of nearly 50 million people.
