The Northern Hemisphere is experiencing unusually cold weather. Snow cover last December was the greatest since satellite monitoring began in 1966. The United Kingdom had the coldest March weather in 50 years, and there were more than a thousand record low temperatures in the United States. The Irish meteorological office reported that March “temperatures were the lowest on record nearly everywhere.” Spring snowfall in Europe was also high. In Moscow, the snow depth was the highest in 134 years of observation.

Cold-weather extremes are a natural climatic variation, and this is exactly the point. If the world were experiencing a climate crisis owing to global warming, there shouldn’t be a single record low temperature anywhere in the world. The Associated Press has assured us, though, that this cold spell is not only consistent with a warming globe, it is actually caused by global warming.

In 2000, British climate researcher and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change contributor David Viner told the Independent that “within a few years, winter snowfall will become a very rare and exciting event.” Sadly, he predicted, “children just aren’t going to know what snow is.” In 2008, environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote in the Los Angeles Times that “snow is so scarce today that most Virginia children probably don’t own a sled.”

Portraying cold weather as the result of global warming is only one aspect of the circus. Gems that stand out include claims that earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes are caused or will be made worse by global warming. Last year, we were told that global warming could “turn us all into hobbits,” the mythical creatures from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels.

Confronted by an endless avalanche of such nonsensical drivel, it seems almost foolhardy to argue facts. There has been no increase in mean global temperature for 15 years. Drought is not increasing, nor are wildfires. Tornadoes are not increasing in frequency or intensity.

Routine hurricanes such as Sandy and Katrina have been offered as evidence of climate change, but worldwide hurricane activity is near a 40-year low. Over the past 20 years, sea level has risen by about 5 centimeters an ominous trend unless you’re aware that since the end of the last Ice Age, global sea level has risen 120 meters.

With each passing year, it is becoming increasingly clear that global warming is not a scientific theory subject to empirical falsification, but a political ideology that has to be fiercely defended against any challenge.

극한의 기후는 자연적인 기후 변형의 하나이며, 이것이 바로 중요한 점이다. 세계가 지구온난화 때문에 기후 위기를 겪고 있다면 세계 어느 곳에서도 최하 기록이 단 한 곳도 나와서는 안 된다. AP통신은 이런 한파는 지구온난화와 일치될 뿐만 아니라 실제로 지구온난화가 원인이라고 우리에게 다짐한다.

정부 간 기후변화 위원회에 기여한 영국의 기후 연구가 데이비드 바이너는 2000년 인디펜던트지에 “몇 년 안에 겨울의 강설은 매우 드물어져 사람들을 흥분시키는 사건이 될 것이다”라고 말했다. 그는 “어린이들은 눈이 무엇인지 모르게 될 것이다”라고 슬프게 예측했다. 환경운동가인 로버트 F 케네디는 로스앤젤레스타임스에 “눈은 오늘날 너무 드물어져 대부분의 버지니아 어린이들은 아마도 썰매를 안 갖고 있을 것이다”라고 2008년에 썼다.

추운 날씨를 지구온난화의 결과로 묘사하는 것은 소동의 한 단면에 불과하다. 돋보이는 일품 가운데는 지진, 쓰나미, 화산의 원인이 지구온난화이며, 이로 인해 더욱 악화될 가능성이 있다는 주장이 포함된다. 우리는 지구온난화가 “인류 전체를 호빗족으로 변화시킬” 수 있다는 말을 지난해 들었다. 호빗족은 J R R 톨키엔의 소설에 등장하는 신화의 인종이다.

그런 비합리적인 헛소리가 끝없이 홍수처럼 쏟아져 나오는 상황에 직면하여 사실을 주장하는 것은 거의 미욱한 짓처럼 보인다. 지난 15년 동안 지구의 평균기온은 올라가지 않았다. 가뭄은 증가하지 않았고 산불도 늘지 않았다. 토네이도의 횟수나 강도는 늘지 않았다.

샌디와 카트리나 같은 일상적인 허리케인이 기후변화의 증거로 제시되지만 전 세계의 허리케인 활동은 지난 40년 동안 최저 수준에 가깝다. 지난 20년 동안 해수면은 대략 5㎝ 올랐다. 마지막 빙하기가 끝난 후 세계의 해수면이 120m 상승한 사실을 모르는 사람에게는 5㎝ 상승이 무서운 추세로 보일 것이다.

지구온난화는 경험에 의한 허위 입증에 따르는 과학적 이론이 아니라 모든 이의제기에 맹렬히 맞설 필요가 있는 정치적 이데올로기라는 것이 해가 지날 때마다 점점 명백해지고 있다.
