[WT논평] Comeuppance begins for the Boomers

For more than 30 years I have been anxiously awaiting the backlash. The backlash to the most self-important, morally superior, narcissistic generation to cast a shadow across this republic in its history, the Baby Boomers.

I, a Baby Boomer by age, awaited the next generation’s rebellion. Certainly, the next generation was not going to immerse itself in drugs, zoo sex and the more idiotic specimens of rock and roll, while adopting all the slogans of the age. Yet I was wrong. A large number of the so-called Gen Xers did conform to the Boomers’ ways, and they looked about as stupid and pathetic as the real thing.

Yet now perhaps the era I have awaited has come. Possibly, the backlash to the Boomers is at hand. Its herald is a book written by a Gen Xer, Bruce Cannon Gibney, and aptly titled, “A Generation of Sociopaths: How the Baby Boomers Betrayed America.”

Admittedly, the Boomers and their sages were from the infantile left. Their influential leaders were Malcolm X, the recently deceased Tom Hayden, and a gaggle of rock musicians who insisted on singing songs about kook metaphysics, nuclear war, nutritional guidance, and who mostly died premature deaths, usually from a drug overdose.

The Boomers did, when they got around to taking jobs, take them in media and the universities ? though quack therapy positions were also prized. There they conferred their nonsensical readings of history, social science and popular culture on America.

Their only legacy was an increase of drug addiction, venereal disease, and a spreading benightedness championed at our nation’s grade schools, high schools and colleges, often by teachers unions.

필자는 반발을 30년 이상 간절히 기다려 왔다. 자부심이 아주 강하고 도덕적 우월감에 빠졌으며 자기도취증에 걸려 역사적으로 우리 공화국 전반에 그림자를 던진 세대인 베이비붐 세대에 대한 반발을 기다렸다.

나이로 따져서 베이비붐 세대인 필자는 다음 세대의 반란을 기다렸다. 분명히 다음 세대는 당대의 모든 구호를 채택하는 가운데 마약, 동물과의 섹스, 로큰롤의 더욱 어리석은 유형에 탐닉하지는 않을 것으로 기대했다. 하지만 필자의 판단이 틀렸다. 소위 X세대 사람들의 대다수가 베이비붐 세대의 방식을 따랐고 그들은 진짜 베이비붐 세대 사람들처럼 어리석고 한심해 보였다.

그러나 필자가 기다렸던 시대가 어쩌면 지금 온 것일지도 모른다. 베이비붐 세대에 대한 반발이 머지않았을 가능성이 있다. X세대인 브루스 캐넌 기브니가 쓴 “소시오패스들의 세대: 베이비붐 세대는 어떻게 미국을 배신했는가”란 제목의 책이 그 전령이다.

공인된 바와 같이, 베이비붐 세대 사람들과 그들의 현자들은 유치한 좌파 출신이다. 그들의 영향력 있는 지도자들은 맬컴 X, 최근 죽은 톰 헤이든 그리고 괴상한 형이상학과 핵전쟁 및 영양지침에 관한 노래 부르기를 고집했고 대다수가 일반적으로 마약 과용으로 조기 사망한 시끄러운 록 음악가 무리였다.

베이비붐 세대 사람들이 취업에 나섰을 때 돌팔이 치료법 직책 역시 중요시했지만 그들은 언론매체와 대학교에서 일자리를 얻었다. 그곳에서 그들은 역사와 사회과학 및 대중문화에 관한 터무니없는 해석을 미국인들에게 제시했다.

그들의 유일한 유산은 마약중독, 성병, 우리나라의 초등학교와 고등학교 및 대학에서 흔히 교원노조의 옹호를 받는 어리석은 발상의 확산이다.
