[WT논평] Nothing is more urgent than defending Western civilization

It should now be apparent that the vision many people had of the world becoming a “global village” ― with everyone interconnected and interdependent, holding similar views and wanting more or less the same things ― was incorrect. On the contrary, the world is divergent.

The civilization that has evolved in the West is pluralistic and tolerant. You’ll see a broad variety of religious and ethnic groups coexisting, their basic human and civil rights protected. The same cannot be said about what we have come to call the Islamic World.

In what used to be Syria and Iraq, Christians, Yazidis and other minorities are facing genocide. Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and Ahmadi Muslims have been fleeing Pakistan for decades.

Jews were driven out of Baghdad, Cairo and Damascus more than a half-century ago and the small Jewish community left in Iran, along with the remaining Zoroastrians and Christians, are inferiors under the Islamic republic’s laws, while the Baha’i suffer unrelenting persecution.

And wherever Islamists establish themselves, from Mali to Bangladesh to Indonesia, Muslims with moderate rather than militant interpretations of their faith are targeted.

Another way to say this: The divisions are only deepening between the multicultural world, where those who wield power accept and even welcome the “other,” and an increasingly monocultural world where medievalists enslave, expel and slaughter the “other.”

But some of us are convinced that nothing is more urgent than defending Western civilization, its diverse cultures and ways of living.

세계가 모든 사람이 서로 연결되고 의존하며 비슷한 견해를 지니고 다소 동일한 것들을 원하는 ‘지구촌’으로 변한다는 많은 사람들의 선견지명이 부정확하다는 것이 이제는 분명해져야 한다. 반대로 세계는 여러 갈래로 갈라지고 있다.

서방에서 진화해온 문명은 다원주의적이고 관대하다. 다양한 종교·인종집단들이 광범위하게 공존하고 그들의 기본 인권과 시민권이 보호받는 것을 보게 된다. 이슬람 세계라 불리게 된 것에 대해서는 이와 동일한 말을 할 수 없다.

과거 시리아·이라크였던 지역에서 기독교도와 야지디 교도, 여타 소수파 집단들이 집단학살에 직면해 있다. 힌두교도와 시크교도, 기독교도와 아흐마디야파 무슬림들은 지난 수십년 동안 파키스탄에서 도피해 나왔다.

유대인들은 반 세기도 더 지난 과거에 바그다드·카이로·다마스쿠스에서 추방당했고, 이란에 남은 소규모 유대인 사회는 이 이슬람 공화국 법률 아래서 잔존 조로아스터교도, 기독교도와 더불어 열등한 인간 취급을 받고 있고 바하이교도는 끊임없는 박해를 당하고 있다.

말리에서 방글라데시와 인도네시아에 이르기까지 이슬람주의자들이 정착하는 모든 곳에서는 자기네 신앙을 호전적이 아니라 온건하게 해석하는 무슬림들은 표적이 된다.

달리 이렇게 말할 수 있다. 권력을 행사하는 사람들이 ‘다른 사람들’을 받아들이고 심지어 환영까지 하는 다문화 세계와 중세 찬미자들이 ‘다른 사람들’을 노예화하고 추방하며 학살하는 단일 문화 세계 사이의 분열은 깊어만 갈 뿐이다.

하지만 우리 가운데 일부 사람들은 서방 문명과 그 문명의 다양한 여러 가지 문화와 생활방식을 수호하는 것보다 더 긴급한 것은 없다고 확신한다.
